Mountain pine beetles kill the trees they infest. When these dead trees dry up, they can burn more easily in a fire. The more dead trees there are in our forests, the greater the risk of a fire in our community.

Your responsibility

Protect our forests and communities from wildfires by removing the beetle-killed trees. If you own land in the County, check your pine trees for the mountain pine beetle

Our progress

Since 2010, the County has removed over 118,000 dead trees from 2,200 hectares of public land under our Mountain Pine Beetle and FireSmart programs. Eighty per cent of the costs of these programs have been funded through the sale of the harvested timber to forest companies. The remaining 20 per cent is covered by grants including the Provincial Forest Resource Improvement Grant and FireSmart program grants through the Forest Resource Improvement Association of Alberta (FRIAA).
