The County of Grande Prairie is disappointed that the City of Grande Prairie has voted to stop mediation and have an arbitrator determine how our two municipalities will jointly deliver services.  The City’s decision comes as a surprise: we felt mediation was moving forward very well. These decisions are complex and take time.

A service delivery framework that best serves the people who live and work in the City and the County should be built by those people, not imposed by an outside body. We believe that such a framework – one created by local government with the needs of local citizens in mind – is in the best interests of both municipalities.

The County has seen great success from using a local model of decision-making: we have already completed five and are nearing completion of six out of seven Intermunicipal Collaboration Frameworks (ICFs) with neighbouring municipalities.

The deadline to complete ICFs is April 1, 2021.
